Grand Hotel Capodimonte ****Plus
Sorrento, Amalfi Coast, Southern Italy

This deluxe four star PLUS luxury hotel hangs onto a steep, craggy cliff face just on the edge of the western part of the Amalfi Coast town of Sorrento in Southern Italy. The numerous structures step up the cliff face one above and set-back from the next. Even the pool is a staircase of five pools each spilling over into the next. The views are truly spectacular out over the town of Sorrento, the harbors and out to sea across the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius in the distance. Sun rises and sun sets and unforgettable! And yet the lively center of the town is at your door step and a short walk away.

The public rooms are large, voluminous and filled with light. Most have spectacular views out over the Bay of Naples and over the old town. The open dining terrace is equally large and serves a huge buffet breakfast as you sit ingesting the view along with the food. The rooms and quits are a delight with the local blue, yellow and ochre colors of tile on the floors, spacious bathrooms also well appointed and plenty of storage many with open terraces overlooking the view.

Despite being built in several different buildings each overlooking the other, elevators make it easy to get poolanywhere with little effort. This is a place where you don't need to ever leave if you don't want to and just want to bake by the pool with the chaises longues equipped with shade screens for your head and face. There are several restaurants two of which over look the pool cluster. Sadly when we were there in the spring of 2022, we think the Pandemic had hit the hotel as it has most hospitality restaurants and hotels all over the world and the food, other than the great breakfast, was disappointing to say the least; edible but not special and not inexpensive. With not enough staff, everyone is over worked. We found the service to be proper but often sloppy and not especially friendly. We were surprised.

But it is an easy walk into town where you can find almost anything you want. Even British food which comes as a shock since you are after all in Italy with some of the world's best food. in the hotel's two Breakfast Terracerestaurants - "Le Ginestre" and "Le Querce" - both with gorgeous views over the coastline. In the warmer months, guests can choose to dine al fresco on the terraces of the Le Querce. As well as the pool and its huge draw, there is an ultra modern gym, beauty salon with hot stone massages, Swedish massages, and body treatments along with Ayurvedic treatments and mani/pedis. there are computer stations at the mouth of the long passage to the main elevators, large banquet room and outside terrace, large library/TV room and those elevators all over the place.

So if you want a really great place to stay and very special surroundings on the Amalfi coast, you could do a lot worse than this lovely hotel.

Note: While even people with some ambulatory issues should be able to access all the facilities, but because of some necessary steps, those wheel chair bound may have some difficulties despite the hotel doing their best to make ease of access.
