Famous Family Restaurant "Lo Scoglio", Amalfi Coast, Italy

At this stunning Amalfi Coast restaurant "Lo Scoglio" (Italian for "rock" on which the dining room sits), you eat sitting above the waves as they unceasingly caress the beach providing a restful cadence of background sound. "Lo Scoglio" stands apart on the Sorrento dining scene, actually the world dining scene, as a truly authentic "Farm to Table" restaurant owned and run by De Simone family through three generations and a forth growing like weeds. It used to be a common sight but it is a rarity in this day and age.

This is a traditional country food restaurant serving Grandmother De Simone's recipes with their firm roots in the local region's family kitchens. They are prepared with only the freshest and best of ingredients and no stinting on quality of all other ingredients as well. This is truly what we call "Haute Grand Mere" cuisine. Refined yet simple; beautiful yet truly a full meal. You will not go away hungry. Linda started with the Vegetable Tasting Dish and it was more than she and I could eat together. Of course I was deep into my plate of “Spaghetti alla Nerano” but there were so many vegetables a group of four diners would be hard put to leave nothing on the serving dishes.

Their rendition of the regional pasta specialty “Spaghetti alla Nerano” (called "The King" by brother waiter Tonino De Simone) is to die for! Perfectly cooked pasta with fried zucchini and provolone cheese will make you want to return again and again. Of course being sited on and over the sea itself, their dishes highlight the area’s famed seafood. We split a fish main dish featuring a deep water species only found in the waters between Capri and Marina del Cantone. Limoncello desserts are a must have in Amalfi.

"Lo Scoglio" is to be found in the small fishing village, (and now holiday town), of Marina del Cantone half an hour of winding steep hillside roads by car from Sorrento with unforgettable views over the sea and the Limoncelo lemon groves that cling to the steep, rough hillsides. The family will also arrange private boat transfers to and from Capri, Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, etc. They have, after all, a private jetty just for sea going visitors. It is worth any detour to experience the freshest fish and vegetables available anywhere. Literally! Set on a rocky beach extending out into over the water, you can watch the clientele arrive by boat and the "Lo Scaglio" launch picking them up to dine. The dining rooms and decks make a pier as well.
